Sandcastles at Castle Warmelo

Warmelo is one of the five castles surrounding the small town of Diepenheim, and its history extends over a period of several centuries. Eventhough various members of the knightly family of Warmelo can be encountered as early as the 14th and 15th centuries. In 1952, the castle was bought by H.R.H. Prins Bernhard. The prince’s mother, princess Armgard, occupied it until her death in April 1971. The property is since a number of years in possession and in use of the Avenarius family.The House is well kwown for his splendid gardens,created in the 20th century,inside the structures from the 18th and 19th centuries.There is a great diversity of gardens:A French rococogarden with a rococopond(17th century) and carefully cutted thuja- and taxushedges,an English landscapegarden with beautiful old trees(18th century),a well garden(“Puttuin”)from the 20th century,a wood with rhododendrons and azaleas,especially beautiful in spring, a rose garden,a Victorian garden(19th century) and pinetum(conifertrees).

Castle Warmelo opened an exhibition of sand sculptures (till 4th of October). The sculptures are placed in the English section of the park.  400 tons of sand is processed in the sculptures. From myths and legends to the regional industry and the farmers life, everything can be found in the sand sculptures.
